Questions about silkmoths
So im from the UK and ive recently been learning a lot about silk worms/moths and im in love with them. Ive found a place that sells them and will be getting some in the next couple weeks.
I found out that because they have been selectively bred for silk that they cant fly and they also dont have functional mouths so slowly starve to death after about 7-10 days. I was quite sad learning that because they are adorable so I was wondering...
because they are silk moths and from what I understand there are different silk moth types? Would it be possible to cross breed the fluffy domestic white ones back to the wild types so that they could at least have functional mouths and live longer? I know its common for moths to not have mouths so idk if its just another case of this specific moth not having a mouth or if it quite literally devolved from being mass produced so it lost the ability to eat 🤔
so would it be possible to cross breed them with other wild silk moths? Has anyone tried it? Would it allow them to eat and potentially fly again? And could it expand their life expectancy to something a little better than a week and a half? 🥺
