So, I've never traded in a car before, always sold private or drove them into the ground and now I have a 2018 CRV in good shape and I'm buying something new. I wanna use it toward the purchase but I don't know the mechanics.

How does a trade in work exactly? Do they appraise before or after you negotiate the new car? Do I need to pay off my loan first? Is there a tax benefit? Just want to understand the process before walking in.
