Which underdrawing do you usually prefer before adding watercolor?
Pencil, water-soluble ink, or waterproof ink?
Or do you skip the underdrawing altogether and paint the colors first, then add pencil or ink once the paint has dried?
I'm curious to know how you all do it!
(Top right: waterproof ink, left: water-soluble ink, bottom: just pencil.)
I painted these today after doing some live sketching of the guys down town yesterday.
i got a grand child and i thought i will make a series of children's book illustration but it is so difficult....Any other artist grandparents out there having the same problem? I mainly use watercolor and ink/pencil and the artworks are small. (i intend to make a few)
Hands up if you’re guilty of paper wasting too? 🙋♀️ Some days I easily burn through 7–8 watercolor sheets... sure, they’re just small A4s, but still! And don't get me wrong—this isn't super productivity, it's just pure, beautiful trial and error! 🙈
It’s a funny thing: I have both Arches and a Baohong roll sitting on my shelf, but I get major stage fright thinking about ruining them. I’m just way more fearless, spontaneous, and experimental when the paper doesn't cost an arm and a leg! 🎨✨
After going through countless Canson XL pads, I stumbled upon Canson Montval at a ridiculously low price on Amazon (especially the 200gsm is a steal). I know it’s not as sturdy as 300gsm, but my wallet and my creativity are celebrating! 💸
(And yes, before anyone says it, I know 100% cotton paper is king! 😉)
Now I’m curious: Do any of you have experience with Canson Montval? Does it hold up to wild, spontaneous painting? Let me know in the comments! 👇💬
stuff you could not dream that was useful... I just used a tablet support as a stand ...Let me have tips and tricks of stuff you use for your watercolor painting
I can't really decide so I made two....Do you prefer a sharp edge on the shadow (top panel) or a blurred edge (bottom panel)... Which one looks better?
There he sits. Quickly now, just the essential lines before he stands up. One line for the back, one for the bench. He has no idea I’m sitting over here watching him. He moves just like normal, completely unaware.
Is he going to leave? No, he’s staying put. But wait, there he crossed his legs. One foot up over the knee.
I draw a few fast, searching lines for the leg and the shoe. The main thing is not to get stuck in details. Just the framework, just the feeling of the body against the wooden bench.
Is he going to look over here? No, he turns his head away. Is he looking at his watch? Is he waiting for someone?
The shadows change constantly as he moves. The sun hits his shoulder, lighting up the front of his shirt.
Just a quick wash of color on the skin and shorts before he changes position again. Fast strokes, let the water do the work. The folds in the fabric of the shirt will have to be what they are – next second they’re gone.
He shifts around again, turns his gaze the other way. The light, the lines, the moment. I made it.
Pheww 😂 🤪 😇
I started a couple of years ago, I always used pencil or charcoal , but i now tried pastels and i like it:) What fo you use in figure drawing session. The paper is plain copier paper, nothing special...
Watercolor 20x30 cm (8x12 iches). The framing is digital (from my free tools on my site) I love the feeling that they are in their bubble ... almost not noticing each other
I shall never do this again ... better to dry it inside with a hair blower or let it dry by itself ...
Lesson learned and the great teacher is the unexpected rainfall 😂
I am still painting people in their everyday life after two years .... this was one om my first.
I have tried to paint landscapes, stilife , animals, water but after a couple of paintings i get back to people walking around in the city... do you change subjects often?
The frame is digital (done with my free tools on my site)

It did not take more than 5 minutes to do, its very small and is painted on a copier paper (80 gsm). I was just doodling portraits expressions from fantasy with pencil and i decided to put some color... Most of the paintings i like are done on "trash" paper ... Am i too nervous or too carefull when i am painting on my "real" cotton paper? The framing is digital , (one of my free tools for all the artists i have on my website)
This painting is now sold and i will miss it :) Painted two years ago when i was starting painting watercolor and i must have a lot of luck because i was satisfied:)
The framing is digital from a free tool i have on my website (and ou can try it )

I am not sure if its ok to mention a YT chanel here but i watched several videos of her last night and she is very pedagogical and offers alot of knowledge in her videos. I wish I could find more chanels like that. If you have a favorite chanel please reply with a link.

Fantasy, inspired by similar image on pinterest. I am happy with the movement and the wind blowing on the dresses... The framing and mat is digital from a free tool i have on my website for this purpose.
The size is about A4 (20x30 cm/8x12 inches) Let me know what you think!
I am satisfied with the lower part but there is something bothering me about the shoulders (anatomically)... Can you see what i mean? Critique is welcome
