Moving from US to Melbourne — best way to transition ongoing TRT treatment in Australia?

Hi all, I'm moving back to Melbourne in August after 11 years in California and trying to work out the smoothest possible transition for continuing TRT in Australia.

I’m 47 and have been on doctor-managed TRT through a clinic in the US for around 4 years with ongoing monitoring and regular bloodwork. I’m currently on injectable testosterone.

I’m trying to understand the best way to bridge this process when I move back to Melbourne — ideally without having to completely discontinue treatment just to meet Australian eligibility requirements.

I’m particularly interested in finding doctors who take a balanced, evidence-based approach and look at the full clinical picture — symptoms, SHBG, free testosterone, quality of life, response to treatment, etc — rather than relying purely on total testosterone numbers in isolation.

A few questions for those who’ve been through this process or know the Melbourne landscape well:

  • What are the current testosterone / bloodwork thresholds or prerequisites for TRT eligibility in Australia?

  • Which Melbourne TRT clinics, GPs, or endocrinologists have the best reputation for being knowledgeable, reasonable, and experienced with ongoing TRT management?

  • Any clinics, GPs, or endos people would specifically avoid?

  • Is it generally smarter to begin through a private TRT clinic first, then transition to a GP long term?

  • Which doctors tend to be more collaborative and willing to take symptoms into account alongside labs, rather than being strictly protocol-driven?

  • Are there particular clinics or doctors known for taking over care for patients already established on TRT overseas?

  • Has anyone successfully transitioned from US-managed TRT to Australia without major interruption to treatment?

I’m not looking for anything reckless or “bro-science” based — just experienced practitioners who genuinely understand hormone management and individual variation between patients. I’m basically trying to work out the best place and way to start this whole process.

If anyone has recommendations but would rather not post publicly, feel free to PM me as well.

Would really appreciate any guidance or first-hand experiences from people who’ve navigated this successfully.
