£550 Gti update

So I did a compression test today ( process of elimination) safe to say it wants to live, I’m not sure what a thp 200 should be making but google suggests 175 to 215 psi ( I don’t know how reliable google is ) but I know 200psi is a good benchmark. I did one cold and one hot so I have a baseline for variations. Lemme know what you think. I beginning to think I should give this car a name again suggestions.

£550 Gti update

So the Gti put it middle finger up to me and said nope it ain’t the headgasket and I tested twice to be sure, looking at something else. It’s gotta be turbo or stem seals. Piston rings aren’t common failures plus it’s not heavy smoke all the time, funny the oil level don’t seem to be moving although it’s got the standard ready and I might as well be reading it with someone sitting on my face.

£550 Gti update

So today I noticed the car doesn’t smoke on first start up and is fine until the water pump engages ( they work on a actuator which spins the pulley when it gets to temperature) then it smokes however no mayo in the oil. I have bought a headgasket tester so we will find out tomorrow but I can not visually see anything like bubbles in the expansion tank.

Not £550 Gti update

So today I’m not working on the Gti because after a mental health awareness ride on my motorcycle I thought I better fix the power steering on the car that actually wants to work. Yes everybody I have a responsible car that actually works ( apart from the ac) I’m not playing dark souls with my choice of cars lol 😂

£550 Gti update

Yeah I don’t think its the cat anymore. That’s something far more significant.

£550 Gti update

I know a lot of guys recommend putting cat clean in as I said in the video it’s quite easy to get a cat of the car and plus putting a decat to replace it while the cat cleans will tell me if it’s actually the cat that’s defective because I’m deleting his suspect issue. I’m skeptical that it is and think possibly the turbo might need a service.

£550 Gti failed again

She failed due to smoke and the mot tester reckons it’s the cat that is blocked. Leaves it on the ramp for around 30 minutes idling with the fan coming on and off every minute trying to cool down, nothing at first then 25 minutes later starts to smoke. He’s certain it’s the catalyst and reckons take it off and put petrol in and clean it out with patio cleaner. lol 😂

£550 Gti update

So previous to my last post my pug failed it mot on a few things, so today straight after work today (fortunately I finished early) to crack on, I did a few bits last weekend and the rest now, it’s got a new pcv valve which was perforated, anti roll bar link, new boot, also I wired a cheap drl and fitted it under the headlight, the smoke issue which wasn’t really present isn’t showing itself even after a hooning and re bled the brakes so everything that it failed on has been done also did the ball joint again on the nearside. She’s booked in tomorrow at 3:30pm to get retested hopefully the mot man is a better mood.

I’ve added the photos of the split boot he was on about and you tell me 😂 also for the ocd viewers this is the state of my workshop. Final pic

£550 Gti update

It failed lol 😂 expected but the mot man was being very picky about the blue smoke being excessive because to me and my mate we couldn’t make it puff after even from idle to 6k rpm. Is it a lot to not really am I gonna inspect it further probably, will I go somewhere else and get it failed on other things definitely.

£550 Gti update 7

Yes I still got it and lots has happened since but today is the day of the mot and let’s see what’s going on and how bad it is. All oil leaks have been done, new front bumper, new rear shocks, vvt phasers cleaned and solenoids, still got a few little issues but nothing a mot will fail.
