Citadel Ultramarines Contrast Test

tldr: applied ultramarine contrast paint to the terminator to see how it would look on the dread if I was to do the same. not sure if it elevated the foundation of the mini in any way, thoughts?

just thinking aloud, im like 1+ yr into the hobby, but have painted consistently since jan and trying to improve, try new things, mediums.

currently working on my first dread and wanted to test out citadel ultramarines contrast paint on a model to see what effects it would have. I wanted increased saturation of the blue and adding a small shadow value in the recesses. to test I painted up a quick terminator. for both models. I primed back, based in dark blue, then mopped a layer of mcgragge blue on top of the model.

I’m not sure if it made an appreciable difference, but this was 5 min after application on the terminator vs. the dread which has not had contrast paint yet. hard to compare the two , but I think it did increase the overall saturation to a slightly darker blue, which I then can work on layering in more mcgragge and then eventually faded ultramarine for the highlights.

I’m considering using an oil wash on the dread vs. this contrast paint method over the base coats (gonna try weathering + decal/stamp application as well on the dread).

thinking the contrast technique for what I want probably would work better on something like a tyranid that has more texture/recesses vs. the flat, curing panels of the terminator. still have to black line the terminator to put in larger shadows, so maybe once I do that, then add highlights, the differences will be more apparent?

edit: comtrast paint lol

appreciate the responses thus far, i replied to several comments but dont see my replies :(

I think going with a blue contrast paint was me playing it too safe as I was scared of messing up 75 min of work on the terminator, I didnt know what to expect, but I def learned something. purple or red coulda been interesting.

need to be more brave and commit to different color base coats to boost vibrancy and applying a contrast paint thats not the same as the primary color of the model!

just got into water color painting, wanted to do a 30 minute painting of a sea scape with a #6 brush on 3.5x5” paper as I’ve read starting small is best! used primary colors only plus orange.

painting small details with a not so fine tipd brush was fun, learned a ton about flow control, pigment density on the brush, mixing colors in different wells, etc.

have watched a few vids, but for the most part, just practicing for fun so I can get better with a goal of painting botanical/tropical plants and fancy goldfish.

WIP but tried the makeup sponge approach for applying the macraggr blue over a black blue base, still learning about volumes, highlights, blending, etc. learning that it takes a lotttt of practice, but the sponge method helps with sketching out the bright areas. now that I see this dude up close, gotta thin my paints more haha. plz excuse the mould lines on the hammer, got these second hand and wanted to dive into repainting them. maybe ill do a lightning effect with thin wire coming out the sprue bit areas on the top side of the hammer
