The Seoul that guidebooks literally don't want you to know about
Hi everyone!
I’m a local university student in Seoul. Over the past year, I volunteered as a tour guide for international visitors. It was an amazing experience, but I noticed one frustrating thing: almost every traveler ends up going to the exact same crowded places (Myeong-dong, Hongdae, Gyeongbokgung) and misses out on the real, local side of Seoul.
So, some friends and I started a passion project called "Hide and Seek." The concept is like an urban treasure hunt—stepping away from the typical tourist traps to discover hidden local gems with a local student "Buddy."
We curated 3 unique routes based on where local students actually hang out, and I would love to get your honest feedback on them from a traveler's perspective:
Route 1 (Namsan's Alleys): Exploring the 1950s Shinhung Market in Haebangchon, visiting a multi-sensory view cafe in Huam-dong, grabbing street food at Namdaemun, and finishing with an old-school student drink called "Boksosa" in Chungmuro.
Route 2 (Art & Hipster Culture): Watching a rom-com theater play in Hyehwa (with Eng/Jap/Chn subtitles), walking the ancient fortress walls at Naksan Park, vintage hunting in Dongmyo, and visiting a Shamanism-themed cocktail bar in Sindang.
Route 3 (Elegance & Hidden Nature): Visiting a quiet artist village in Buam-dong, tasting oil tteokbokki at Tongin Market, seeing a hidden mountain valley (Suseong-dong), and catching a panoramic palace view from a secret museum rooftop.
We are actually running a small MVP test soon. If you are an international student currently in Seoul and want to join one of these tours for free. exchange for your honest feedback and a few photos/Reels, please let me know!
Which route looks the most interesting to you? Any advice or feedback on these spots would be highly appreciated.
Feel free to comment below or shoot me a DM if you're interested in joining the test!
