Please help! I watched the movie The Awakening, and the romance subplot vibes awakened a very specific appetite in me. The MC's are both lonely and haunted by the past- he has war trauma and survivor's guilt, she is grieving her fiancé, and it's set at an isolated school during the winter. They are almost at odds, but not enemies to lovers; they're just skeptical of each other. It's not a conventional romance, more like they take comfort in each other through their loneliness, and combined with the haunting, it makes their connection feel intense and desperate. Steam/spice preferred. I don't want the romance with a vampire or monster, but it doesn't matter if they are in the book. The ghosts can be real or not, as long as it has a dash of danger/thriller.
I searched past requests first, but didn't see anything that matched what I wanted closely, and most gothic requests are from years ago.
