This is not made by AI, I did it myself (I'm learning SketchUp). My question is about the lower shelf. I plan to laminate the boards and have the grain going end-to-end of the coffee table. The second pic is just the shelf and the stretcher under it. The rails are mortise and tenons, if that matters.

What do I need to do to accommodate for the horizontal wood movement of the shelf? I've got it dadoed in at the ends of the table. Right now I've got a 1/4" dado here, it's not deeper because of the tenons. Is this the best joint, or should I switch it to mortise and tenon?

Future tripping, where would I avoid putting glue on the lower shelf?
