Thank you for reading this post. We are having a sump pump related issue and hoping to get some insights here.

We live in a semi-detached house that was built in the early 90s. There's a sump pump in the basement that connects to 1.5'' abs pipe (black color). The discharge line goes into ground just a few inches (no more than a foot) away from the side of the house.

A few days ago I discovered that the system wasn't working well. The sump pump does work as it's intended: when the water level gets high enough, the float triggers the pump and the water is drained within a minute.

However, as soon as the sump is emptied and pump stops working, the water immediately flows back into the pit from the pump (NOT from Foundation drain). I would say about more than 90% of the drained water flows back to the sump.

I would like some opinions on the possible cause of this situation? I understand that a bit of water flowing back to the pit is normal, as I didn't install a check valve, but this is definitely too much. Thanks!
