Engineering or Quant Finance?

I'm an engineering student (Junior EE) and I've been researching and experimenting with AI for a year now. I have lost interest in working for a company with my degree and would rather just build out projects that I think of. This has propelled me into thinking just about money. I'm good with math and was thinking about just switching to a finance/math major to pursue a quant role. I have experience in trading crypto currencies and have studied basic risk management, but that's pretty much it. Is there anyone in a similar situation or has done something similar? If so, what's your story?

Edit: I have internship experience with the same company since I was a freshman if that changes anything.
