As so often happens, some homeowner before me planted a ton of lilyturf (or monkey grass or liriope) and I've finally decided to rip it all out. When I noticed it had tubers, I of course found myself asking "hey, wait. Can I eat this?"
Everything that I find online says that people do ingest them as part of traditional eastern medicine, usually candied. But just because people do eat a certain thing for medicinal purposes, doesn't mean it should be. Or should be in large amounts. Looking at you, licorice root. Or how some things pull a stupid amount of heavy metals out of the soil or make your prescriptions ineffective, or so on and so forth. (St. John's wort, grapefruit, blah, blah, blah...)
Anyway, the tubers are delicious, sweet with a slight pepperiness, but does anyone know more about its chemical makeup? Nutritional facts? What about preparation? Must they be candied?
