I hope the is allowed in the sub...my coworker and friend lost her husband last week. He battled metastatic cancer for over 2 years. Their boys are 4 and 2 year old twins. As independent hairstylists, we only have income if we are behind the chair. Any amount will help her stay home and help the boys with the transition of losing their dad. He fought so hard to stay with them as long as he could. Please share and send loving and peaceful intentions to the family.

NIPSCO said it made its “last, best and final” offer to the United Steelworkers on Monday night, just before current contracts expire at the end of Tuesday, but the union objected to the proposal.

The contracts NIPSCO has with USW Locals 12775 and 13796 are slated to expire at midnight, and the two sides have not agreed to a rolling extension, USW Local 12775 Vice President Vern Beck said late Monday.

"Both negotiating teams are currently reviewing the company’s proposal. On the surface, we can see that the offer fails to address the locals' number one concern of increasing, and in some cases carte blanche, use of contractors, not recognizing the union's position and removing our transparency to the process," Beck said.

NIPSCO gave the union until 9 a.m. Tuesday to accept its final offer, but then extended the deadline until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Beck said. The two sides have continued negotiating all day Tuesday.

The union hopes to reach an agreement at the bargaining table.

"It's so weird," he said. "They've made so much money and made the public so angry at them. You would think they would want to keep the support of the people who work for them. It makes no sense."

NIPSCO said its final proposal includes higher-than-historical increases in pay, a substantial one-time ratification bonus, safety enhancements to reduce fatigue, additional jobs and enhanced benefits, including paid parental leave and holiday flexibility.

The union has a number of concerns, including forced mandatory overtime, cutting the hours workers can work during the day, cutting pay, cutting sick leave, moving jobs to Ohio and bringing in more contractors to replace union workers.

More than 98% of NIPSCO workers voted last week to authorize its leadership to declare a strike if talks break down.

"While the offer includes items our members appreciate, this agreement is about more than wages and other economic matters," Beck said. "The union is still insistent upon safety and training concerns that make our extremely knowledgeable workforce stronger and protect the communities that we live and work in. Our dedicated members are always on the job in times of need and strive to put in the hours to ensure service, emergency response and minimize outages."
