SI Digital Analysis Series #17 -What effect does board choice have on win rates?

This article will analyze balanced boards, their effect on adversaries and spirits and which specific boards are most difficult. This article seeks to answer the following question: how much impact does board choice have on win percentages?

First though, an immense shout-out to Handelabra Games for allowing me access to Spirit Island Digital’s game session log data and for creating and continuing to support one of the best board game adaptations on the market. If you haven’t already, check out Spirit Island Digital as it is great for getting more games in. 1. What makes board A so challenging?

  2. Do you consider board choice a legitimate strategic choice or randomized boards to be the default?

  3. If you compared a spirit’s various starting set-ups for each board to their win rates, what were your findings?

I've started some analysis of minor/major powers and am trying to categorize them by which summary of powers their effects fall under as well as subcategories of those. What do you think of these categories/subcategories? Cards can obviously fit under multiple categories/subcategories.

Fear Fear
Offense Damage invaders, destroy invaders
Defense Defend, remove blight, skip invader action
Control Move invaders, move dahan, move tokens, isolate, move blight
Utility Add tokens, reclaim cards, give elements, proliferation, add destroyed presence, repeat, gain energy, other, change speed, increase range, add dahan, other

How would you categorize removing/downgrading/replacing invaders?

Would you categorize adding tokens different depending on which is added? For example, should adding strife be under defense?

Would you categorize increasing health of dahan/preventing their destruction as defense or utility?
