A Shrunken Head
Spooky season is finally here! I’m trying to come up with some new ideas for simple tutorials, and this was one of them.

The CCA had their annual show recently. I wasn’t able to attend, but one of the events they sponsor each year is a whittling competition. Everyone gets a 2x2x6” block, is allowed 1 knife and one other tool of their choosing, and had 2 hours to carve something Halloween themed.
I decided to try to replicate the competition setting and knocked this guy out yesterday. My tools were the BSB Cutty Sark knife and their #7 gouge.
In an effort to get ahead of the Christmas rush I’ve started on ornaments already. Just a few of the ones I’ve recently finished
I had planned to have this guy made into rough outs, but that’s a steep investment that I just can’t justify right now. Decided to paint him up as a go-by for an upcoming class
Had fun figuring out different ways to exaggerate features on this guy. All carved from a 1.5x1.5x6” block, the base is 1” tall
I’ve been working on a lot of various expressions lately, but I’ve never gone for sad. Decided it was time to give that a shot, and this was the result.
Old men are far and away my favorite carving subject. So many ways to get creative with their expressions
Shew… this stuff is tough. I love the way it finishes though
