Stereotypically, I mean, and of course this question goes beyond angels too (God himself wears robes in plenty of paintings). Was this just the fashion of the time? Is it a deliberate choice to tie them to a specific culture? Is it Biblically founded? It seems oddly universal for something that doesn't really seem like an intuitive decision to reach.
