New Amex Gold card account opened Nov 2025. I recently had an ACH/autopay payment returned and now my account has temporary transaction restrictions (apparently declined transactions until payment clears i’m assuming)
What happened was:
Before autopay processed, I had already made two separate manual payments totaling about $900 toward the balance. However, those manual payments had not reflected on the statement balance yet when autopay triggered, so Amex still attempted to withdraw the original larger autopay amount. The manual payment was from a different account, it cleared. But the full statement balance that was on autopay ended up getting returned. Once I realized what happened I just refunded the account. It retried the day after & the retry payment has already successfully drafted from my bank account today. Amex haven’t updated though.
For anyone who’s experienced this with a newer Amex account:
- How long did it take for restrictions to lift after the retry cleared?
- Did Amex reduce your spending power long term?
- Did your account recover normally after one returned ACH payment?
Just looking for real experiences because this is my first returned payment with Amex due to manual payment & timing issue with autopay.
