Need Help Supporting a New Pergola – Can I Use My Existing Deck Corner Posts?
Hey everyone! I’m looking to add a pergola to my deck and want to know if I can work with my existing structure.
\*\*Here’s the situation:\*\*
My deck has corner posts with notched cuts that support the outer joists.
I’ve taken photos of the corner post cuts to show you what I’m working with. I want to add two vertical 6x6 posts—one at each end of the deck to carry a pergola roof (similar to what is shown in the 4th pic only with a roof)
\*\*My question:\*\*
Can I attach a 6x6 vertically above these existing corner posts to create support points for the pergola? Or should I approach this differently?
The setup:
- Fully deck-supported pergola (not tied into the house at all)
- Two 6x6 posts, one at each end
- Trying to use the existing corner post locations as anchor points
- Want to make sure it’s done right and safely
Would love to hear your thoughts on the best way to attach another 6x6 vertically and what fastening method would be safest (bolts, brackets, etc.).
Any advice on structure, code compliance, or potential issues? Thanks in advance!
