Old Dog Vestibular disease
We thought our 13yo, Tyson, had a stroke on Saturday. He had trouble standing and walking; staggered around, had trouble eating. We’ve had him less than 2 years and knew he wasn’t going to be with us long, but the sudden turn left us looking at that inevitability with fear that we would lose him “too soon.” Turns out he has Old Dog Vestibular decease, caused, our vet thinks, by a virus (she said that distemper [must have had it when he was younger] can lie latent in the cells, and can affect their inner ears - like chicken pox causes shingles). This causes severe vertigo. He should be back to normal in a week or 2. It was quite the scare, but also a great relief.
