UW AMATH-DS vs UIUC Stats for AI/ML research: current UW CS pathway?

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming international transfer student admitted to UW Applied Math: Data Science. My current major is CS, and I’ve already taken courses like data structures, algorithms, discrete math, computer architecture, and digital logic.

I’m trying to understand how realistic the current UW student pathway to Allen School CS is for someone in my situation. I know admission is competitive and not guaranteed, and I’ve read the official Allen School pages, but I’d appreciate hearing from students who have gone through the process recently.

A few specific questions:

If I start at UW in Autumn, would it be possible to apply to CS after my first Fall quarter, assuming my transfer credits satisfy the prerequisites?

The official website didn’t provide data for 26spring/fall admissions. I have heard that it is getting relatively easier to get in as the job market is getting worse. Is that true?

For students admitted to Applied Math/Data Science who were interested in AI/ML research, did you feel the major gave you enough access to relevant courses, research opportunities, or Allen/AI-related communities?

I’m also considering UIUC Statistics, where switching to CS + Stats may be possible. For someone interested in AI research and potentially PhD applications, would UW AMATH + Seattle research opportunities outweigh the easier CS-adjacent path at UIUC?

I’m not looking for a guaranteed answer, just trying to hear from people with recent experience before making a decision. Thanks!
