I have the opportunity to work with one of the local high schools as an assistant coach on their varsity team. I'm so excited because I love softball! I had a very late start to the game (started playing 9th grade out of interest) but fell in love with the game immediately. I haven't played in over 6-7 years since leaving high school.
I have this great opportunity to work with two very experienced coaches, one is the HC and the other the AC, and they have worked together for years and coached club and ASA teams, but I feel like I don't have much to offer. I'm excited to start and learn from them as much as possible and get that experience and mentorship though! I have been to a few practices and games now and I feel like they are so in sync and routine that I kinda don't know where to get in or fit in, but I want to be taken seriously and just don't know how to prove myself.
I watch college softball and catch games here and there if I come across them at local parks and things, but since I haven't played for long, I feel like I lack the knowledge. I'm the type of person who is always willing to learn and do research to know more.
I really want to be back next year with the team and keep learning, any tips to solidify my spot and make myself more valuable?
****Note: I should mention that I was OF and had great fielding and ball reading skills. Essentially was hired to help with that but all around just to have more hands for such a large team.
