E-2 spouse (I-94 shows E-2, not E-2S) – has anyone successfully requested CBP correction instead of filing I-765 EAD?

I am currently in the US as the spouse of an E-2 visa holder. My I-94 only shows “E-2” and does not include the “E-2S” annotation.
I am trying to understand my situation regarding work authorization, and I am getting mixed information.
Some people told me that:
E-2 spouses with E-2S on their I-94 can work without an EAD
Others say E-2 spouses without E-2S must file Form I-765 to get an EAD, which can take a significant amount of time and costs around $500 in fees
I also heard that it may be possible to request a correction from CBP (Customs and Border Protection) or Deferred Inspection to add E-2S to the I-94
I am trying to avoid unnecessary delays and fees if a correction is possible.
My questions are:
Has anyone successfully requested CBP to update their I-94 from E-2 to E-2S?
If yes, how did you do it (email, deferred inspection, airport office)?
How long did it take and was it approved?
Did you still need to file Form I-765 afterward, or was the correction enough for work authorization?
Any real experiences would be really appreciated, as I am trying to understand the most reliable path forward.
