Best practices for AI-native UI design without a design system?

Hi, I am PD who's jobhunting and I want to prototype a demo app that I can package as an AI-native case study and add it to my portfolio. Already have Claude Max + Figma MCP + Refero MCP working, and I already figured out research phase and sitemap.

My biggest 2 questions are:

  1. Design System (don't have one). Shall I grab a free one from Figma Community and ask Claude to generate components from it? Any other smart way of approaching it?
  2. Screens in Figma(?). I've read it's a heavy, token-burning task for Claude and the results could be so-so. Also read that this might not be even necessary and I can ask Claude to "design" in HTML, skipping the Figma file altogether. What's your take on that?

Looking for best practices / tips on UI creation with this stack.
Thanks in advance!
