Spotify recommendations engine is now "paid to win", by artists, wtf
I’m actually a big fan of Spotify. The recommendations are fantastic and have helped me discover a lot of new music. It’s probably also one of the best things that has happened to small artists — niche discovery without being filtered through mainstream radio and labels.
That’s why I’m genuinely sad to see Spotify blending “pay-to-win” into these recommendation lists. One thing is having a clearly marked sponsored section. But mixing “organic” and “paid” recommendations in a way where users can’t tell the difference feels like a slippery slope.
Clear separation between sponsored and organic discovery matters. Otherwise, the algorithm slowly stops feeling like a music nerd friend and starts feeling like an ad platform.

Our personalized recommendations are tailored to your unique taste, taking into account many factors, such as what you’re listening to and when, actions you take like searching, skipping or saving to your Library, information you share with Spotify like your location, age and who you follow, trends and the listening habits of people who have similar taste, the characteristics of the content itself such as genre and release date, and the expertise of our teams.
About recommendations and the impact of promotion
Spotify recommendations help you find music, podcasts, audiobooks and other content you'll enjoy.
In some cases, commercial considerations may influence our recommendations. For example, Spotify offers a promotional tool that enables artists and record labels to highlight priority songs, increasing the likelihood of them being recommended in specific algorithmic playlists: Radio, Autoplay and certain Mixes. This can help artists be discovered by new listeners and grow their fan bases, including prior to a new release, as part of a cultural moment, or in celebration of a milestone. For streams of those priority songs generated in impacted playlists, Spotify charges a commission. This tool is not active in other playlists, such as editorial ones.
