Everything is our fault, and I guess we are an inconvenience too

I need to rant. Here's a compilation of things that are becoming really old, really quick.

Guests arrive unprepared - they come to the desk and give their name to check in. When asked for cc and photo ID, they sign impatiently, grumble that they have to go get it from the car. Why are you impatient and grumbling?? You can't tell me you didn't know we would ask for them, so why did you leave them in the car?

Trying to use someone else's credit card - it's either "just use the one in the reservation", or actually handing us a card with someone else's name on it. Then getting angry when we say we have to send a cc auth form or the cardholder has be be present, making rude comments, swearing, saying they've never heard of this before, saying they do it all the time (yeah right), just throwing an adult temper tantrum and acting like it's OUR fault.

Guests acting like we're beneath them, or inconveniencing them by trying to do our job - I've had soooo many guests lately who walk up to the desk and either just toss their photo ID on the desk and not even give their name, not say hello or anything, or just spit out their name in an impatient tone without even looking at me. Then proceed to barely speak or look at me while I check them in. We are people, you know. You could at least say hello when you arrive at our front desk.

Guests who don't listen - we ask for cc and photo ID and they only hand us one. Ask for the other one and they act surprised and sometimes annoyed. Or ask them to fill out the registration card and they just stand there looking around. Ask them again and they act surprised or annoyed. "Oh, you want me to to fill this out?" I know I'm talking loud enough so it's not just that they didn't hear me.

Guests apparently having better things to do with their time while we try to check them in - after giving their cc and photo ID, walking away to check out the snack shop, or going to look for a washroom, or walking away to talk to someone else, or talking on their phone while trying to check in. Recent guest hands over card and walks to the other end of the desk, I ask them to come back to sign the reg card, they do and then walk away again, I ask them to come back to insert their card in the machine, they do then walk away again. Guests behind them have an amused look on their faces. I now refuse to check in guests who are on their phone. I have questions to ask, they have steps to follow. When they hang up and seem annoyed, I "apologize" and say I didn't want to interrupt their call.

And still one of my personal favorites - their name isn't on the reservation and they get angry at us because "we" have to keep them waiting while we contact the guest whose name IS on the reservation to get permission. Most recent example is two men checking into a woman's reservation. Guy who was the one trying to check in then says it's the other guy's wife name on the reservation (so why are you even the one trying to check in?? and I should just take your word for it?), and starts swearing saying its BS service. Right. You thought I could just check you into someone's reservation when your name isn't even on it? Like at all?

People are exhausting.

I have plenty more examples, but this post would be waay too long.

*Edit to add a sentence I forgot.

Just check me in anyway!

Anyone else experience guests trying to check in but their name isn't on the reservation?

Has happened several times lately.

We explain sorry but the guest will have to come in with their photo ID. This is met with eye rolls, exasperated sighs and protests saying they are out in the car and they do this all the time. Never mind us explaining it's a security policy. Had a guest recently say they didn't like my attitude and asked my name. I can see the negative review now. Or the email to management. Great.

Sometimes the guest whose name is on the reservation did not even come. But of course no notes or phone calls to say we can check in someone else. We say we have to contact the guest for permission. Receive the same responses of impatience and usually an earful. Yes sometimes there are exceptions depending on the circumstances, but really. You just expect us to check you in to someone else's reservation? Especially when the last names do not even match? It's exhausting.

Just use the credit card on file

Guessing most people staying at hotels are pretty well-travelled and fully aware of normal check-in procedure. At every hotel. Everywhere. Slight variations in policy from hotel to hotel. Free pass to those whose first time it is travelling or who travel rarely. :-)

Arrive at hotel and when asked for credit card, guests reply with these excuses:

Just use the credit card on file. No problem, but I still need to see the actual physical card. Really, why? I've never been asked for one before (uh huh). Oh, I don't know. Only to verify that it actually is your card being used and you aren't using someone else's without their knowledge?

My company is paying. Well, there is nothing in the reservation to tell me this. I either need your credit card, or for the company to send us an authorization form. But it's the company card on file! Just use it. I have no way to prove that. They huff and puff and either give their own card, or wait impatiently for the company to send the form.

But it's already paid! Yes, it is paid to the third party, but we have to have your card on file too for incidentals. Just use the one I gave the third party! Doesn't work like that -we don't have any of your payment details because you did not pay us. And still need to see the physical card. But I didn't bring it! Of course you didn't.

I'll just tap to pay with my phone. Sorry, we don't take tap to pay to check in - only for hotel sundry sales. Then just use the card in the reservation. Sorry, we need the physical card. But I didn't bring it! Of course you didn't.

Please can everyone just come prepared. Why would you think we can just use a random card that is in the reservation, without knowing whose it is? They all claim they never have to give a card and this has never happened before. Annoying part is that almost all will put a bad review online saying we gave them or their employee a hassle at check-in over credit card procedures.

I see you left your manners at home

Hi All. I've been reading this sub reddit for a while, thought I would participate.

Why do guests (and customers in general?) think they're more important than other guests who are being waited on before they even arrived in the lobby?

This happens almost on the daily, but the examples below happened on the same day, when I was checking in ONE guest.

I'm checking in a guest when another guest arrives off to the side of the desk. Sets some money on the desk and says they want to make change for their bill. I say I will be with them in a moment.

Almost immediately after while I'm still checking in the same guest, another guest shows up on the other side of the desk, interrupts and says he wants to check in his group. I say I will be right with you.

A few seconds after that, a third guest shows up behind the guest I'm checking in. I smile to acknowledge her and she apparently takes that as a sign that I'm now going to ignore the first guest and help her. Says she's here to pick up an item she forgot. I'll be right with you, ma'am. She says she has to go check into her other hotel. I'll be right with you, ma'am. She then tells one of the guests travelling with the one I'm checking in that she's just there to pick up something she forgot and will just be a minute. He stares at her blankly.

I finish checking in the guest (who by the way stood there patiently and didn't react at all to the rudeness going on around him) and wait on the others - in the order that they arrived at the desk.

Seriously, why do people think they're more important than anyone else and should be served immediately even when someone else was clearly there first?
