Messy Caddis Puppa

Messy Caddis Puppa

This is a Mustad Alpha Point Caddis Offset Barbless CO68XAP, size 10. I think they are 2x short, but they are at least 2x sharp.

What I like about them, is the sturdy wire they're built on, and the big eye. It's practical for someone with a shaking hand.

Tag: Small UV flat tinsel. Body: Troutline Belgian Rabbit Dubbing olive caddis. Rib: Golden wire. Thorax: Troutline Thorax Nymph Dupping dark.

Sunday Funday

This is not your average Rakkelhanen (Capercaillie-Black Grouse hybrid).

The Rakkelhanen was invented by Kenneth Boström in 1967 as a caddis imitation. It's normally tied using brown antron — because apparently fish back then had very conservative taste in flies.

This one is not meant for trout. In Denmark, the pink Rakkelhanen is used for fishing disco eel, or garfish, which is the species correct name.

Pink thread, pink antron, Owner 50355 size 4.

Green pheasant tail, chartreuse wire, green Hare's Ice Dub, and a gold bead. Tied on some Daiichi hook I don't like.

Simple fly, but works very well. #14 hook, brown Hends Micro Fibbets for tail, brown Hends Body Quills for abdomen, brown FlyRite dubbing for thorax, tan poly wing, and speckled brown hackle.

Foam is fake, but it makes the fly float forever. Jack Horner invented this fly in the 40's. Tied close to the original, but the back is of foam and not deer or elk hair.

Edit: This fat boy is known as the Humphrey.

I never fish upside down flies as I think the wing is going to work like a guard preventing the hook to set. Still, fun tie.

Pattern by Lucian Vaseis (At least I found the pattern on his blog.)

Hopefully the mayflies will start hatching soon.

I first came across this stonefly nymph online, but never managed to find it again. Anyone have any knowledge about this pattern?

Anyhow, tied on a Daiichi 1730 #8. Black goose biots for tail, antennae, and legs. Tag is chartreuse flat braid, abdomen is black UNI Yar with silver wire rib, thorax is Hare's ICE Dub, wing case of black pheasant tail, and 3,2 mm Sunny Gritty Slotted Tungsten Beads.

Danish fly fisher Henning Eskol invented the Klympen fly pattern while fishing for sea run browns at Bornholm.

The original pattern has a tail of mallard or grizzly rooster, a body of copper wire, a thorax of tan SLF, and a soft tan hen hackle. Tied on a hook size #8 to #2.

This is a simplified spider version for creek fishing. No tail, a copper wire body, a thorax of rusty bronze Senyo's Laser dub, and a black hackle for contrast. Hook #12.

Not tested, but it will hit the waters on Sunday.
