Looking to make a change, lots of questions.
Hey everyone,
First off, let me preface this with my experience. I’m about to hit 30 and have been working management/ technical jobs for the past 8 or so years in medium to heavy industrial plants (everything from controls positions to engineering and millwright, from tech to management in every area). The company I am most recently with is in the process of ceasing US operations (thankfully walking away with a severance) and I am considering making a change to something that is a bit more stable.
I have my OSHA 30 and am a licensed PMP (not that I expect this will get me anything but shit from the old heads lol) if either helps.
I am mostly leaning towards IW with Local 26 (data centers turn me on, scale of project & pay scale lol). I have a buddy that is a JW with 26 that will most likely give me a referral, not sure if that matters in the union world? For anyone that has recently gone through the process, what’s it like? How cutthroat is it? Am I too late to the game at almost 30, or could my experience set me apart from some of the younger guys? I’m reading online that 26 stops accepting applications at the end of march for the apprenticeship, I’m assuming that means I’m SoL until next year?
Appreciate any help I can get!
