Hi everyone. I'm doing a one-year MSc in the UK and I feel beyond lost. My supervisor is not helpful and I am doing this pretty much 100% independently. I will skip the nonsense and just tell you I have zero motivation whatsoever, on top of feeling directionless and frankly unprepared for this topic. I didn't know what I was getting into and I don't think I can do this, especially alone.

The dissertation is due at the end of August 2026, and obviously it's now nearly May. Ordinarily I would say suck it up, but I have done almost 0 research or work so far because I am so unmotivated and confused. If I had more guidance I think it would be better, but there is none.

If I could even convince the department to let me switch topics, do you think it would be advisible at this point, if there's a chance that working with someone different or working with something I'm more confident in would improve the overall outcome of the work? I would not have chosen this topic if I knew there would be next to no support.
