How I passed TEF French (C1/C1/B2/B2) in under a year
I want to share my TEF success story because I know how stressful this exam can be, especially when you need to pass on the first attempt due to financial reasons.
I started learning French around October last year with a very basic level. At first, I used YouTube, Français Facile, and language apps. That helped me build a foundation, but I later realized I wasn’t actually preparing for TEF specifically; just learning general French.
After that, I moved into more structured preparation with guidance to focus on exam strategy.
Speaking
This was my weakest area because I’m naturally shy. I forced myself to speak 30 minutes daily on common topics. I also learned the most frequent TEF themes and prepared vocabulary, synonyms, and expressions for them. Part B (argumentation) was the hardest, but practice made a big difference.
Writing
Vocabulary was my biggest challenge. I focused on structure first, especially for Section A (80 words). Planning before writing Section B really helped me stay organized.
Listening
Generally manageable, but the last sections (long broadcasts/interviews) were tough. I used skimming and scanning techniques and focused on understanding key ideas instead of every word.
Reading
Short texts, graphs, and fill-in-the-blanks were easier. The difficulty came with long administrative texts and articles, which required strategy and practice.
What helped me
What helped me most was combining structured learning (French classes with guidance) and consistent self-practice. If you can, do both classes and self-study; but self-study alone can also work if you have the right resources and can put in long hours of dedication.
Most importantly, I practiced all four sections consistently. I did at least 20 mock questions per section.
My results:
EO (Speaking): C1,EE (Writing): B2
CO (Listening): B2, CE (Reading): C1
