Heavily Rooted Bed

Just spent maybe 3 hours trying to dig through the top layer of mulch+soil to clear a lot of the protruding stems along with their roots and prep to lay tarp and rocks so I don’t have to deal with weeds or any plants in this bed at all. I don’t plan on planting putting any new plants in with the rocks.

I’m having a really hard time clearing all this out, there just has to be a better way than the rake+hoe combo. Can anyone give some tips on how to more efficiently remove all the roots and cut back bush stumps. I’ve got a shovel, hoe, thick metal rake, long and small handheld snippers that can cut through maybe 2-3in wood. The soil is very silty, but practically the entire thing is covered with roots
