Rent control does more than protect tenants from rent hikes, it protects their health
Neighbors, today, the Boston Globe published an op-ed with the brilliant Julian Rodríguez-Drix and myself, and together we drove home the point that housing policy is public health policy.
Corporate landlords are buying up our neighborhoods and hiking rents while they bankroll the political campaigns of elected officials. Because of that, working folks, the majority of whom are renters, are getting forced out of the city.
We know that when rents skyrocket, people don't just lose money. They lose their stability, their health, and their peace of mind. In the worst cases, they even lose their lives.
That’s why overturning the Mayor’s veto of rent stabilization tonight matters so much.
