Foster Kitten has chipmunk stripes

I’m currently fostering these 3 babies and their mom for my local shelter. I love the markings on the tabby. Those stripes down her back make her look like a chipmunk. I think I have to keep her. And the mom. And all of them.

Trimming help

From what I’ve read so far, it sounds like it’s important to cut off new growth so that the main stalk can thrive. That’s sad but I can do it. My question is more about what to do with the removed pieces. Can I replant them? Some things say I should soak in water first until I see new roots form. Other things I’ve read say to let dry out before planting. And other things recommend to wait until it’s a foot long to cut if I want to replant. What methods have worked best for you?
