Already working at a hedge fund — is an MFE the best path to quant research?
I’m currently working at a top multi-manager hedge fund in a risk-focused role outside the US.
My work gives me exposure to markets, some risk modeling, and a decent amount of production-level coding. I don’t hate it at all, and I think if I moved to the US through an MFE, I’d probably end up in a similar role (or perhaps a better-paid version of it).
The reason I’m considering an MFE is not immigration or prestige. My main thought is that it could potentially open doors to quant researcher or quant trader roles that are harder to access directly from where I am today.
What I’m struggling with is the following:
I genuinely enjoy learning mathematics, statistics, and ML. But I’m not convinced that a master’s degree is the best way to learn those things. Most of the material can be self-studied, and I already spend a lot of time doing that.
So I’m wondering whether I should:
Stay in my current role, continue earning, keep getting market exposure, study math/ML independently, work on research projects/Kaggle/etc., and spend a few years figuring out what I actually want to specialize in.
or
Do an MFE at a top program, gain access to US recruiting pipelines, and try to pivot more aggressively toward quant trading/research.
Part of my hesitation is that I don’t really want to become “just another strat.” What attracts me is research. My intuition is that becoming a strong researcher takes years of developing taste, intuition, and depth, and I’m not sure an MFE meaningfully accelerates that process.
On the other hand, maybe I’m underestimating the value of being surrounded by smart peers, professors, recruiters, and a strong quant ecosystem.
For context:
Strong quantitative background.
Good enough profile that I think top MFE programs are realistic.
No strong desire to move to the US for lifestyle reasons alone.
Main goal is maximizing long-term growth toward genuine research-oriented work.
For people who have been in the industry longer: if your goal is eventually becoming a researcher rather than simply getting a quant title, would you choose the MFE route or continue building skills independently while working in a hedge fund?
Interested especially in opinions from people who have done MFEs and from researchers who did not.
