If you want to practice your French, please, read the room.

A little bit of a rant, a little bit of a piece of advice.

This afternoon, I went to a café to get a drink with a friend. We were waiting in line while a group of 3 was ordering at the counter. One of them was in charge of placing the order and decided to do it in French. However, since it seemingly was not their mother tongue, it took a little longer. Long enough for the line to grow behind my friend and me. Long enough for the employee who was taking the order to suggest to switch in English to help make things easier. The person said no 🙂

First of all, I think it was a bit rude to refuse to switch in English because they absolutely wanted to speak French while we were all waiting. I know that some tourists come to Paris and want to be able to order in French when they go to the bakery, for example. More power to you, really. French is not an easy language and I commend you if you are learning.

However, I think we all need to be aware that there is a time and place to practice. Maybe when you are going shopping and sale associates are available to talk with you is the right time. Not when 10 people are waiting to order at a counter and the employees want to go quick with the orders.

Lately, I've seen too many videos of English speakers sharing their experience and being disappointed because when they would speak in French to baristas, waiters, etc., they would often get a response in English. I understand the disappointment but I guess it's about efficiency and understanding. At the end of the day, it's important to be understood whether it's in French or English. At the same time, it's important to be mindful and respectful. So do not take it personally when people want to switch in English.

Bien cordialement,
