Teen/youth novel, I read the softcover in the early 00's.

Writing and jokes reminded me of Douglas Adam's HHTTG, it's witty and a little absurdist iirc.

I think they go to the moon? They definitely go to a different planet at some point , and I don't think it was inhabited, but I think they had to avoid giant worms at one point.

One big thing that's stuck with me is the description that the uncle/grandpa/male adult figure, had made his money by inventing the little tabs that are on the ends of sausages.

Please help! I have googled the details I know and cannot for the life of me find it lol. It might have been a 2 or 3 novel series but it was definitely not more than that, at least when I read it.
