Hypothetical Self defense Question SETTLE THIS DEBATE
Yes most of you are not lawyers, no I will not be taking this as legal advice
Some context: my friend and I are having a debate and cannot settle it. Today I was headed to the gym with my friend, both of us are conceal carry licensed but today neither of us had our usual carries on us as it’s only a 10min walk from our homes (what could happen in 10 minutes right?) when a car blasted through a roundabout easily going 40+ in our residential neighborhood nearly hitting us, the car had 4 passengers 2 of them in the front had masks and gloves on while the other 2 were young women probably around ~17yo. We thought nothing of it and kept walking when I noticed they had stopped in the middle of the street and turned around. I let my friend know and they pulled up next to us cursing at us and threatening to shoot us for looking at them too long and to keep our eyes to ourselves. We kept it pushing to not escalate it after following us for a few yards they sped off.
Now to my question which my friend and I are debating: had the people in the car escalated the situation further at which point would we legally be allowed to defend ourselves with our carries assuming we had them on us.
1: if they stopped the car, exited the vehicle and started approaching us while continuing to show aggression
2: if they physically got in our faces and put hands on us
3: not until we saw some sort of posturing of them reaching for a firearm/physically saw a weapon in hand
Bonus points if you can confirm whether or not we have a duty to retreat (more context my friend is fat and I am recovering from a sprained ankle and my ability to run is impaired)
TLDR: if multiple masked individuals pulled up next to you and showed clear signs of aggression/threats at what point would you legally be allowed to defend yourself if at all
