How long did it take for your new piggies to get comfortable?
I just got a pair of female piggies on Saturday and they are still very scared. The first 24 hours they didn’t leave the hide once. I had to put everything they needed in or around the hides.
Now, they are a little less terrified but they stay in the hide most of the time and run around and eat at night or during the day when I’m at work (I have a camera on them).
My question is, how long did it take for your piggies to come out and eat while your around? I’m trying to take it slow and only have them associate me with good things like food and a clean enclosure.
I have not tried to pick them up since I brought them home. I’m trying to respect their space and want them to not fear my presence. I do sit by the enclosure for stretches of time to see if they’ll just go about their activities. So far no luck.
They don’t seem particularly food motivated. They only eat when I’ve been gone for a while. They don’t eat treats when I leave them out (oxbow, and pea flakes). They seem to only like romain lettuce, pellets and hay. They leave all other veggies alone. They do like the vitamin c tablets which is great cuz they seem to hate bell peppers :(
Any advice to help them feel more comfortable? Is it normal for them to be this scared in the beginning? Here’s my cage set up so far. I know people have opinions on hay racks. This picture is slightly old, I have hay mostly just inside the box now since they weren’t using the rack anyway.
