My endocrinologist gave me dangerous advice about breastfeeding and RAI. Should I cancel and find a new doctor?

I don't know what to do. I really do not like the endocrinologist I was sent to right after my surgery.
I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 7 weeks postpartum after I had already established breastfeeding. I was told I need Radioactive Iodine (RAI) therapy and that I would have to stop breastfeeding.
My endocrinologist told me I could keep breastfeeding until just a week before my RAI appointment and completely dismissed my concerns about the treatment's impact on my breast health. I trusted him, and he gave me a lactation suppressant drug.
Now, I am exactly one week away from my RAI appointment, and I am reading everywhere that your breast tissue is supposed to be completely dried up and inactive for weeks or months before the treatment to avoid concentrated radiation damage.
What do I do? Do I call, cancel, and find a new endocrinologist? I feel so lost and let down.

Jacksonville Florida

I’ve been dealing with a few bad coordinators and bad markets recently. I was wondering if there was anyone in Jacksonville Florida or Northeast fl that would interested in some kind of community or Facebook group or Reddit thread to discuss markets that went BAD for them. For example AI poster coordinators or coordinators that promise huge turnouts and do zero marketing. I’d love to get some actual vendor feedback on what markets are great, and which ones are just not worth it. I would also love to discuss coordinators that are incredible and WORTH it.

I don’t want rai

Feeling super emotional today. I had my TT 2 months ago when I was 7 weeks post partum. I had a 3.4cm follicular angioinvasive carcinoma with a 10mm papillary. I’m breastfeeding a 3.5 month old and I’m in the stages of waiting for my thyrogen and RAI to be approved by insurance. My TG is 1 with a TSH of 7 and my endo just increased my dose of Levo after that bloodwork. Ultrasound showed residual tissue around my vocal cords because they preserved them in surgery to protect my voice. Both my endo and surgeon are pushing hard for RAI and I just don’t want to. I am a SAHM with 2 kids under 3. This just all sucks and I wish I could keep breastfeeding and push it off until my kid is a year old. What are the risks of that? Has anyone waited 6-9 months to do their RAI? Feeling angry and frustrated and wish this nightmare would end.

Angioinvasive Follicular Carcinoma AND Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma while breastfeeding a 7 week old

Really going through it right now. When I was 16 weeks pregnant, I went in for a physical with my primary care doctor, and she found a lump in my thyroid. I had an ultrasound, FNA, and genetic testing done throughout my pregnancy, and I was referred to a surgeon for a 2.8 cm Bethesda IV follicular neoplasm with a 1% chance of malignancy.

I wasn’t even going to get the surgery, but after talking with the surgeon, we decided to do a partial lobectomy just to get it over with. I wasn’t that concerned, but I didn’t want to just monitor it forever and have to get it taken out eventually. We also had already met our insurance deductible and out-of-pocket max for the year because of the pregnancy.

So I gave birth and scheduled my surgery for 7 weeks postpartum. A few days later, I got a call from my surgeon that it was actually an angioinvasive follicular carcinoma, and I needed the rest of my thyroid removed along with RAI. I was also breastfeeding a 7-week-old. He asked me to come back within the week for a total thyroidectomy. Shocked is an understatement. So we got the surgery done, and my parathyroids decided to go offline, and I was admitted after the procedure.

This has just been so much. I’m being told I have to stop breastfeeding, my thyroid hormones are all over the place, and breastfeeding may be making my calcium issues worse due to parathyroid dysfunction.

At my follow-up for my second surgery today, they found that I also had a 10 mm papillary carcinoma in the remaining tissue on the right side that was removed during the first surgery.

I’m working with endocrinology, and they said I may be able to breastfeed for 3 more months and then get RAI, but my surgeon is saying I need RAI as soon as possible. I also saw that if breast tissue is active, there may be an increased risk of breast cancer later in life.

I’m looking for similar stories and outcomes. Thank you for reading and for this community 🩷
