“Someone has already erased evidence of your presence on my computer.”

“As far as this building is concerned, you were never here this weekend. Grab what you can. You may need it later.”

She said it fast, eyes forward, barely above a whisper.

“I’ll have to tell them I didn’t see you. For your safety and mine.”

And then the part that lodged deep in my bones:

“Think long and hard about what you do next. He is a very powerful man. Be careful who you trust with your story.”

A billionaire gave his new secretary unlimited amounts of play money and watched to see whether she understood if any of it was real...

“Don’t talk, just listen,” he finally grumbled on the phone.

The auction progressed through its early pieces. I sat in the front row, with a paddle in one hand and gripping a wired house phone to my ear, feeling a bit underqualified.

Waiting.

“Bid! Raise the paddle!”

I jumped and raised the paddle, my cheerleading skills kicking in. I may have waved it like a flag too. I was that excited.

“One hundred thousand dollars,” said the auctioneer with a nod in my direction.

BAMM!

Down went the gavel.

When I heard that number and the gavel hit the wooden block, a shot of pure adrenaline surged from the base of my spine and spread everywhere.

Then someone else bid.

“Two hundred thousand.”

BAMM!

“Bid! Raise the paddle!” Mr. B shouted.

I raised it.

Back and forth. The whole room was charged by it. Numbers were climbing in increments my entire previous life had never conceived.

I raised that paddle every time he said bid and felt — I can’t explain it exactly — my heart went BOOM with every slam of the BAMM!

Maybe like what a hard-core gambler must feel like in Vegas? Addicted. Thrilled. Wanting it. Needing it. Have to have it. Winning at whatever the cost.
