How common is it to not get paid for the 1st month when working for an appraisal firm? What do you do during that time?

I interviewed at an appraisal firm some months ago and the guy said that they pay fees after 1 months instead of after 2 or 3. I was shocked as I'd normally had salaried positions, but I'd been told that that's how most firms worked. However most places I'd worked are larger firms where the appraisers had a draw.

What if you're at a smaller place that pays fees only once a month or less often but didn't give you a draw? How do people survive?

I got three *2nd round* interviews *with hiring managers* within a couple of weeks in late January/early February. In late March I got an interview with a 4th company pretty quickly with the hiring manager (a long time industry contact) and their boss that seemed to go REALLY well. Granted the guy went on vacation for 10 days, but he emailed me the day after he got back saying someone else quit & the office is in disarray & he's been digging out of emails etc. basically telling me, "Hold on, I haven't forgotten you." I emailed him back & got no response. That was 2 weeks ago.

I can't believe that out of 4 warm interviews with hiring managers that I'm still totally empty handed. Ok, granted I didn't really want the 1st job but I can do the work and they know it. The guy who interviewed me was a recently hired former colleague from another company we both worked at. Truth be told I was let go but then the company went through 4 rounds of mass layoffs within 2 years so there's that.

I got a rejection letter from 1 (the one I really wanted, actually). Fine. It is what it is. I had other options.

The 3rd one they said 'the staff really enjoyed meeting with me and want to revisit the role and hiring plan" once they get some time to train people outside of busy season and that they WILL touch base with me at the end of March. I heard nothing, do I emailed him on April 8th. Crickets. April 16th I reached out to one of the people I interviewed with. More crickets. I've basically written them off at this point.

Lastly the 4th one with the long time industry contact. Guy emailed me after he got back from vacation. I responded. Nothing. Emailed him again yesterday after 2 weeks. Still nothing. Ok so he says he has a lot of fires to put out and they the recruiting process at the large corporation he's at takes forever but I did see you job reposted a few days ago. Maybe they've decided not to hire me and are looking for someone else?

I don't understand how after all this momentum I'm still empty-handed. I thought all the interviews went well, especially the last one. If I can't get a job this way how else am I going to get a job?
