Is there a way to drive 120hz mode via iPhone 17? Using Air 4 Pro

I can’t seem to figure this out and think it’s impossible. There doesn’t seem to be a way to drive an external 120hz display with iPhone 17…. I don’t see any obvious setting to change. Maybe someone has experience making this work?

I don’t think an iPhone 17 can properly drive 1080p 120hz in SDR mode. For whatever reason, I can’t seem to make it work. I use Voidlink (moonlight fork) and wanted to play my pc games in 120hz but it just doesn’t work. I manually put Air 4 in 120hz mode but it’s still 60fps max. I tried on my laptop and was able to get 120hz/120fps to work properly in Moonlight.

Bought Air 4 Pro and debating about returning it (tried VertoXR too)

I’ve been debating about buying a set of AR glasses for travel and chilling during downtime in work cafe. Anyways, saw the Amazon Prime sale and pulled the trigger and the Air 4 Pro delivered the next day.

For what it’s worth, I own a Quest 3 (and have used older vr headsets) - use an iPhone 17 and my desktop pc has a 5080 plus modern work windows laptop.

I received my Air 4 Pro today and was excited to try it out and I think I’m realizing it’s not as useful nor as good as I hoped. Maybe I’m missing something…?

Pros: I think the display quality: colors/black levels is relatively good! HDR is good enough- not as good as an lg oled but better than qled! The sound itself seemed pretty potent although I don’t think I’d use that in public (I’d use AirPods. I think it’s comfortable enough that I can wear these while rest my head against a pillow in bed.

Cons and issues that may cause me to return this:

  1. The constant “follow me” mode is kinda exhausting and annoying. There’s an aspect of my brain that wants my eyes to move across a scene but I can’t do that as the screen moves as I move my head. Sometimes I also want to look away. I realize that’d is probably prefer a proper 6dof (or 3dof) AR glasses

  2. I tried on my work laptop and was able to get 120hz/120fps to work properly in Moonlight.

  3. Verto xr (for 3dof) doesn’t seem to be a very good experience in my opinion. I tried it with my gaming rig and it works strangely…. My virtual display will gradually move over time (in minutes), so it’s not really useful for productivity. Even the steamVR is really strange and kinda doesn’t work.., you have to click the two side buttons to put Air 4 in 3d mode but the SteamVR rarely works. I have to restart it like 10 time and it eventually work. When it does work; the fov is tiny…. If a quest 3 is like wearing binoculars - this is like looking through a monocular

  4. The mobile iOS RayNeo XR app seems kinda interesting but useless. I can look at my own photos and do weird 3d effects. But it’d be more useful to have 3dof for a variety of apps (like watching plex/jellyfin, webXR or heck even vr 180 videos). Is there a useful iOS app I should try?

Open to feedback and retrying a few different ideas before I likely return this $240 device. Maybe I can revisit this once Android XR is at gen 2 or something. I think there’s definitely potential here and it’s definitely less friction to wear these glasses over a Quest 3 vr headset.
