Big Explorer!

Coco has been out since 12:30 pm exploring! For context, it is now 4:45 pm where I live, so he’s been out for hours. This is the longest I’ve ever seen him constantly exploring :)

Also yes the door is open because I’m sitting right in front watching him and secretly hoping he’ll be curious enough to want to hang lol

Help identifying unknown bug

Was looking at one of the darkling beetles in my tank that’s in there as cleanup crew and my boyfriend noticed a weird worm-like bug, miniature.

There are only two darklings, one that was a metalwork and one that was super worm, they had been at the bottom of a shipment box from an order we got so we kept them and they turned into beetles that we added to the tank.

Does anyone know what these are? Are they bad to have in the tank? We have a bioactive for context, with cleanup crew consisting of some powder orange isopods, springtails, and the two beetles.

They kind of look like fungus gnats, but not sure because their heads are not black. Any ideas and does anyone know if they are harmful to our snake? Also could it be newly hatched mealworms?? They kinda look like mini versions of mealworms.

Thank you!!!

First Handle Session

Today was Coco’s first handling session, even though we’ve had him for a 2 months! He wasn’t feeding for the first month and a half so we didn’t handle him.

He’s had a few consistent meals now though, so today was the day and he did so well!! Don’t have great pictures but what a cutie I’m in love.

He was stressed about being grabbed but once we’ve shown him we’re not a threat and we’ve gotten him more acclimated to being handled a bit, my boyfriend and I are going to work on choice-based handling.

He was very interested in my boyfriend’s green Stardew Valley shirt haha

Successful feeding on F/T!!

*frozen thawed pinky, not live.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the advice on my last post, it was quite helpful.

After boosting the temps on the cool side yesterday morning, Coco was out and about and even slept out in the open in the corner during the evening.

He’s been out this morning so I thawed a pinky in some cold water and then warmed water and rubbed some raw salmon on it. Put it in a paper towel tube (cut to 1/3 the length) on his basking spot and within 5 minutes he found it and gobbled it up!!

Didn’t wanna scare him so I zoomed in from far, not the best quality video but so happy!!

Need thoughts & opinions

Hi all!

My boyfriend and I recently got a hognose (first time snake owners and I did soooooo much research before hand). This is Coco, first picture when he is in blue was from the first day we got him! We’ve had him since May 7th, and although he was constantly exploring and scoping almost daily, he didn’t eat for about a month and a half. He’s about 7 months old.

After many, many (and many more) attempts at feeding, from tong feeding, to drop feeding, to deli cup feeding, he would not eat. We were trying pinkies (he was 12g when we got him, 5 months old) and tried scenting with different scents and the whole nine yards. He finally, FINALLY, ate a piece of raw salmon, like devoured it and was looking for more. That was end of June, and then 16 days ago we fed him a pinky with a sliver of salmon on it and he ate it.

He has now been burrowed in his substrate since, came out once about 3 days ago for a bit then went right back to burrowing..

I know they are natural burrowing snakes, but I just want to check in and see what other people think because I always see people mentioning strict feeding schedules and such but we have a bioactive enclosure and to dig through the soil/sand mix and uproot our plants all the time is quite a process and I know digging them up can be stressful so we’ve just let him be and figured when he’s hungry he’ll come out. Does that make sense? Anything else we should be doing?

Ps. Sorry for my absolute novel of a post… 🫠
