Starting hockey in your 30s. Where to begin?

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about learning to play hockey, I have been looking around Chicago and have found a few spots that have beginner classes and contacted a few places for more info.

I'm not a terrific skater, I can stay standing and can snowplow, that's about it lol. I'm thinking I might need to take skating lessons first?

For those starting later in life, what was the learning process like for you? Did you take skating classes first? Did you jump right into learning with all the hockey gear on? How long until you felt comfortable/stable on the ice?

I'd love to hear about everyone's experiences, struggles, successes, tips , life hacks, secrets, etc...

I'm 35 and have been training jiu jitsu for almost 9 years and I love the sport, the community and I'm hoping hockey can give me new fun experiences!

Also if anyone plays in Chicago, would love recs!

Thanks in advance!
