Onirical, Melancholic Fantasy Books

Looking for onirical, melancholic fantasy books like The NeverEnding Story. Especially with surreal/liminal locations, symbolic worlds, psychological or spiritual journeys, and themes of identity, emotional emptiness, transformation, and losing/finding yourself again.

Already read: The Hounds of the Morrigan, Labyrinth novelization, and The Dark Crystal novelization :)

Looking for Onirical, Melancholic Fantasy Like The NeverEnding Story

Hi everyone, I would like to ask for help finding books with the same dreamy, mythic, melancholic vibe as The NeverEnding Story.

What I loved most was the atmosphere: surreal places like the Colored Sand Desert and the Southern Oracle/Sphinxes area — locations that feel lonely, symbolic, dreamlike, and emotionally charged. I’m especially looking for fantasy where the world reflects the character’s inner journey.

Themes/vibes I’m looking for:

  • personal growth and identity
  • losing yourself and finding yourself again
  • greed, emotional emptiness, transformation
  • psychological/spiritual journeys
  • surreal or onirical settings, ruins, deserts, labyrinths, impossible landscapes

Preferably little to no romance, or romance that stays secondary (though feel free to recommend something anyway if it really fits).

Already read:

  • The Hounds of the Morrigan
  • Labyrinth novelization
  • The Dark Crystal novelization

Would love recommendations 😄
