What am I doing wrong, these umas literally have 10% and 20% speed growth

If I get groundwork at all, I don't even get close to maxed speed. If I don't get any groundwork even though I still have it available in sparks and skill hints, I maybe have a chance to get maxed speed. I don't get it. Especially with Kitasan, since she had double the speed growth.

At first I thought it was bad rng, since my speed cards seemed allergic to speed training throughout most of these runs -- but there has to be some skill issues somewhere for me to consistently get less than 1000 speed. I tried guts decks since I was building front runners, and I think they use that for the spot struggle and accelerating, but I don't have enough higher race bonus guts cards for me to really make a guts-main deck, and Tachyon's my only wit card that has a high race bonus. Is that the problem? That I can't go all-in on guts? I decided to just try power and speed on Kitasan after getting no groundwork on Daiwa twice, but even that didn't get me enough speed...or enough anything, really.

This is my first time seeing the rival not be the second or first favorite, which I thought was automatic since they're supposed to be your rival. And out of all of the umas, it ended up being Nishino Flower too (who has made me clock several sprints and miles before when running late surgers). Digitan ended up being the second favorite.
