Seeking advice on HKUST MSc in Biomolecular Engineering and Health Informatics (BEHI) – Programming & Curriculum Depth?
Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer for the MSc in Biomolecular Engineering and Health Informatics (BEHI) at HKUST for the Fall 2026 intake. I’m currently trying to decide if this program aligns with my career goals and would love to hear from some seniors or alumni!
Coming from a background with only basic C programming knowledge, my main focus is mastering Bioinformatics programming (Python/R) and their applications in genomic data.
I have a few specific questions:
- Core Focus: Is the curriculum more leaned towards "wet lab" biomolecular engineering, or is there a heavy emphasis on "dry lab" informatics and data analysis?
- Programming Proficiency: How much Python or R will we actually learn? Does the program provide enough training to handle real-world biological data, or is it more of a "surface-level" introduction?
- One Semester Progress: Realistically, how much progress can a student make in one semester? For someone with limited coding experience, is the learning curve manageable while still being rigorous enough to be useful?
- Integrated Project: For the "Integrated Project" component, is it possible to produce work high-quality enough for publication?
If anyone has experience with the faculty or the workload, I’d appreciate any insights you can share. Thanks in advance!
