Last year my husband helped his mother clean out her house in the southern US. (She’s a bit of a hoarder and is losing mobility.) He found a lot of rat droppings throughout the house.

A couple of weeks later, she was hospitalized with a respiratory illness that the doctors said was related to the rat droppings. She made a full recovery but I’m just wondering:

Did she have hantavirus, or are there other rat-dropping related respiratory illnesses?
