So here’s my dilemma. I have a player who’s been passive in my game for almost the entirety of my time dming for this group. I know the guy can roleplay (in fact in a recent one shot he was the mvp for how much he made the table laugh). Sure he played a joke character but the fact he could make us laugh, in character shows me he has the chops. I’ve tried talking to him about and i brought it up again recently but i haven’t received a response from him and i likely won’t, given he’s dodged questions of how to make things more fun.
So, I have decided to force this players hand and inna way directly call him out but offer him an awesome opportunity roleplaying wise if he chooses to accept it.
In essence, i want to reveal he’s an imposter, a thief who stole someone else’s life out of sheer envy. (Which makes this interesting as he ended up throwing away that life to become an adventurer). He and his allies would witness him murder the person who he claims to be and take on their form. However, he was cunning and this came with strings, so he made sure to destroy who he was as he took over this other person’s life.
Now i will offer him the choice. Continue on, deny this truth and remain the passive passenger he has been for so long (the call out essentially) or, accept the truth, accept the blood on his claws. If he denies it he will have no memory of these events but the other players characters will know, causing dramatic tension either way, or if he accepts it, tie his fate to a problem npc the group has been dealing with and also gain a level of Warlock for free. I’d even let him choose what kind which would in turn determine the nature of the being he and the party are already on a collision course with.
So I’ve read the feedback, and my initial instinct was wrong. I just wish he’d get more into the sessions than staying in the back saying “wow” literally!
