I have a theory that is probably wrong but I think it’s a fun idea. Back in 1996, many fans of the original Mission Impossible shows (including Peter Graves, who played Jim Phelps) were dismayed when Phelps turned out to be the villain. I have found that choice to be odd myself, though I haven‘’t seen the original shows. But I have a theory. >!Now that we know that Briggs from Dead Reckoning and Final Reckoning is actually Jim Phelps (jr.), my new head canon is that at some point he joins the IMF and becomes the Jim Phelps from the show and that the films are updated and rebooted prequels to the original show. So the lead from the show is not the villain of the first film, then, but his father is.!<
