How are businesses actually growing on TikTok and Instagram in 2026?

I work in social analytics and the more time i spend in this space the more confused i get.

Businesses are spending genuinely insane amounts on creating and monitoring content, and the tools we're all using to measure any of it are still clunky, shallow, and weirdly expensive.

Half of them are just dashboards on top of dashboards.

Am i missing something? if you're a brand or agency spending real money here, what are you actually getting out of your analytics stack? and is anyone measuring anything beyond reach, engagement and follower count in a way that actually informs decisions?

Not pitching anything. just increasingly suspicious the emperor has no clothes and if I'm wayy off on my own initiatives.

What's the side project you abandoned that you still think about?

Either the one that flopped publicly or got 2 upvotes on launch day, or the one you killed before anyone saw it. Sat at 60% done for months, then you quietly archived the repo and never mentioned it again.

But you still think about it. Maybe you google it sometimes to see if someone else built it.

What was it, and why did you actually stop? and not "no time" - the real reason. Lost interest, got scared, saw a competitor, realised you didn't actually want to do customer support for it, whatever it actually was.

If someone DM'd you tomorrow offering to build it with you, would you say yes?
